The world's first Urban-Air Port for Advanced Air Mobility

LEARN MORE

Heralding a new age of zero-emission transport

On April 25th 2022 we launched Air One, the world's first fully operational Urban-Air Port for drones and electric vertical take-off & landing (eVTOL) aircraft in Coventry, the 2021 UK City of Culture. Over the following 3 weeks, more than 100 successful drone flights were demonstrated to an audience of over 15,000 visitors including global businesses, government officials, the press, schools and academia, and the general public.

Supported by the UK Government’s Future Flight Challenge programme, Air One was designed as a demonstrator to show how purpose-built ground infrastructure can unleash the potential of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) to decarbonise transport and cut air pollution and congestion, whilst providing seamless passenger journeys and deliveries. For the first time ever visitors were able to experience our ultra-compact vertiport technology and see live drone flights, aircraft command and control, eVTOL charging, cargo loading, and a demonstration of our non-aeronautical revenue including a fully working café, automated vending and a retail brand showcase. The event was supported by our partner, Supernal, who provided a full scale model of their S-A1 eVTOL.

Air One was designed and built in 15 months, with construction taking just 11 weeks. Working with Coventry City Council a site was selected at Westminster Car Park in the city centre, immediately next to the train station and a 10 minute walk from the central shopping district. The ultra dense location, serving Coventry’s population of close to 400,000 people, aligned with Urban-Air Port’s future plans to establish a new intermodal infrastructure, connecting to and complimenting existing infrastructure and encouraging greener modes of transportation such as e-bikes and e-scooters for final mile delivery.

British innovation has a rich history of transforming global transportation, from the creation of the railroads in the 1800s, to the growth of great British brands such as Jaguar, Triumph and Rover in the 1950s.

The opening of Air One, backed by Government funding, will revolutionise the way people and goods travel across the nation. This step forward puts Britain at the vanguard of clean transport, bringing investment and high-skilled, green job opportunities to the nation, while levelling up opportunity in the Midlands.
— Minister for Aviation, Robert Courts
